Apple is usually excellent in this field, and the older generations often keep its products on the latest versions of the operating system or at least blessed with safety updates to maintain safe. This means that the real distinctive element of the duration that IPAD can continue is safety updates. Once they stop, it is not recommended to continue using the device, as it may be weak. In general, Apple releases safety updates for two generations after finishing support for the latest version. For example, when iPados 17 arrived in 2023, Apple still releases updates for iPados 16 and 15 throughout the year. But with iPados 18, Apple stopped issuing regular security updates for iPados 15 and iPados 16. (The last update to iPados 16 was in August 2024).
Safety updates are relatively frequently released and simply updated the symbol in the system to close any potential areas where infiltrators or harmful programs can access. With the arrival of iPados 18, Apple dropped IPADOS 15 and iPados 16, which means that the iPad Air 2nd Gen and iPad Mini 4, has been dropped from the subsidized iPad menu.
Since Apple no longer supports them with safety updates, you should avoid any iPad that cannot run iPados 16. This includes these models:
- iPad Air (General and Late)
- IPAD (General Fourth and Late)
- ipad mini (the fourth general)
Keep in mind that in late 2025, IPADOS 17 support may end, and at this point the following iPad devices will not be supported:

Apple currently supports IPADOS 18 and 17 security updates. IPAD is able to run iPados 18 of 2018 and the oldest iPad capable of running iPados 17 is the 12.9 -inch IPAD Pro is iPad Pro and 2017 iPad (Gen Gen 5th). Apple may stop the IPADOS 17 safety updates in late 2025 or 2026, and then will end the support for these models. Note that the first iPad Pro 12.9 inches is old by Apple (as you will see in the section below!)
This is still from seven to ten years of security support. When purchasing the iPad, you can assume between eight and 10 years of security updates.
If this is the full version of the iPados you face, you can expect about six years of support-third generation of iPad Pro 12.9 inches is the oldest iPad that can run iPados 18, and was presented in 2018.

In general, Apple transports devices to the old menu between five and seven years of stopping their sale. About seven years after Apple stopped selling a product, it is transferred to the old menu, although some countries have different rules.
Once Apple is considered a wine, your chance is to be able to get tough spare parts, but when the product is old, you will not be able to get alternative spare parts. Therefore, if five years have passed since Apple stops selling the iPad, it is unlikely to be able to get spare parts if something wrong occurs.

How long should the iPad continue?
On the software side of things, it seems from the current examples shown above that you can expect the safety of programs for the safety of the programs up to nine years when the iPad is sold, however, we will not count on it.
Since Apple is not considered an ancient product even after five years of stopping it, you can expect at least six years of support (assuming that the product has been sold for a year, although the Apple often sells products for a lot longer).
Of course, the devices are the other side of the equation and can be more random as the parts deteriorate or fail. Say that your battery life starts from the cliff, you will need to be in the warranty period for one year to fix it for free. Apple has a battery replacement service, it usually costs $ 99/99 pounds to replace and install them, so it can prolong the side of the devices to some extent (mainly until it was transferred to the old menu after five years of Apple stopped selling them).
Apple provides devices and spare parts for a group of old iPad devices, all at a cost of course.
