
The U.S. military launched strikes against Islamic State infrastructure and weapons sites in Syria, officials said Friday, following an attack on U.S. and partner forces in Syria last week that killed three Americans.
President Donald Trump vowed revenge on Saturday after two US Army soldiers and an American civilian translator were killed in the attack, an incident the Defense Department said occurred during a counter-terrorism operation.
Trump announced Friday On social truth The United States “is carrying out very serious retaliatory actions, as promised, against the murderous terrorists responsible” for the deaths of these terrorists.
He said in the post: “We are striking very hard at ISIS strongholds in Syria, a place soaked in blood and with many problems, but a place with a bright future if ISIS can be eliminated.”
The goal of the operation was to strike the sites where ISIS was trying to reconstitute its ranks, uproot those forces, and destroy their sites on a large scale, according to an American official.
The US military used A-10 and F-16 aircraft, Apache helicopters and HIMARS systems while Jordanian F-16s also provided support, the official said.
Defense Minister Pete Hegseth Published on X The strikes killed “a lot” of “enemies.”
He added: “Earlier today, US forces began Operation Hawk Strike in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in direct response to the attack on US forces that occurred on December 13 in Palmyra, Syria.”
Additional information about the raid and the total number of victims was not immediately available.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said Friday about the attack: “President Trump told the world that the United States would avenge the killing of our heroes at the hands of ISIS in Syria, and he is keeping that promise.”
Three other American employees were wounded in the December 13 attack in Palmyra, according to Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman. He said on X last Saturday. He added that the soldiers were “conducting a major leadership engagement” in “supporting ongoing operations against ISIS.”
