
Tim Allen has reflected on the challenges that came with serving as a mentor to his younger colleagues during his time there Home improvement.
As fans know, Allen began his sitcom career successfully ABC serieswhich ran from 1991 to 1999 and followed his character Tim Taylor along with his on-screen family.
In a new interview with Us WeeklyThe actor admitted that playing a father to his TV sons didn’t feel natural at first.
“It was new to me and it took a while for me to get into it [father figure]Allen shared.
He went on to explain that his dynamic with the younger actors was more playful than paternal.
Reflecting on the responsibility of mentoring young actors, Allen acknowledged the complexity of the role.
He added: “It’s hard because I said that when it’s easy to be a TV dad, it’s easy. When it’s hard to be a TV dad, you’re really worthless.”
The actor also noted that some of his former colleagues had suffered “horrible personal trauma,” which made the situation even more difficult in hindsight.
“[For example with the] “Home improvement kids, it’s been a long time and I’m new to this, and it’s been very difficult for me to be anywhere near a mentor or mentor,” Allen explained.
Looking back, Allen said he didn’t embrace a full mentoring role until later in his career.
“It was very difficult to step in, and I didn’t become a mentor until later. But they all had great parents,” he concluded.
