Thousands of people gathered in Frankfurt to protest against the Gaza war on Saturday after the courts canceled the ban on the Western German city of the demonstration.
The police reported nearly 11,000 attendees at the starting point at Hafeenpark, originally exceeding 5,000 registered.
The demonstrators, who carry Palestinian flags and protest stickers, responded slogans such as “freedom for Palestine” and “from the river to the sea – Palestine will be free.”
This last phrase was a source of legal conflicts in Germany, as some cities are active to use, while some courts have canceled the convictions.
The march, which was held under the slogan “UNITED4GAZA – Genuine Stop is now stopped!” It was scheduled to move from East Frankfurt to the Rosimmar Square in the city center.
The police reported that there were no major accidents or riots in the afternoon.
However, one of the speakers in the demonstration was detained after the comments were charged on charges of Holocaust and October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel.
The officers arrested the man after he refused to comply with their order until he ended his speech.
According to the police, some people have also been aware of the wearing of masks. A small number of criminal crimes have been identified, including incitement suspected of hate.
The city authorities had previously tried to ban the demonstration, noting this as a “potential gathering of Semitism”.
The city said it was concerned about the escalation of tensions between the supporters of the Palestinians and the supporters of Israelis.
However, the organizer challenged the ban and won the case in the Frankfurt Administrative Court on Thursday.
The court ruled that the embargo was unjustified based on the evaluation of the current police risks, saying that the embargo required an immediate danger to public safety.
The Administrative Court also reviewed the demonstration and decided on Friday that it could continue. The court noted that the police could focus on individual rioters to support the basic right to the freedom of assembly for other participants.
