“They stole our future” – RedState

For some time now, we have been watching the move back and forth over Greenland. The United States, Denmark and NATO countries have been at loggerheads since President Trump took office a year ago. However, the United States has attempted to acquire Greenland on multiple occasions over the years, and for good reason; Not only is Greenland strategically located in the North Atlantic Ocean, but it also has the energy and mineral resources the United States needs.

Denmark insists that Greenland will remain a Danish possession. Greenland’s political leadership also insists on this status quo.

But the indigenous people of Greenland She may have other ideas.

Amarok Petersen, a Greenlandic, was 27 years old when she learned the painful truth about why she couldn’t have children — and that Denmark was to blame.

She suffers from severe uterine problems, as a doctor discovered the presence of a contraceptive device inside her body, which she did not know existed.

Danish doctors transplanted her when she was just 13 years old as part of a population control program for thousands of indigenous Greenlandic girls and women.

“I will never have children,” Petersen told the newspaper, tears of anger and sadness streaming from her eyes. “He took that choice away from me.”

Amarok Petersen is not the only Greenlander who has reason to be dissatisfied with Danish rule.

Even into adulthood, medical decisions were made without Petersen’s consent. After experiencing problems after using an IUD, she underwent repeated surgeries due to unexplained pain. Doctors did not tell her until years later that her fallopian tubes had been removed in a surgical operation in the early 2000s.

She said her family also suffered under the so-called “Little Danes Experiment,” where Greenlandic children were forcibly sent to Denmark for adoption or institutional care — often permanently separated from their families.

The program, which ran from the 1950s through the 1970s, was part of Denmark’s broader effort to Accommodation of Greenlandic childrenoften without parental consent.

To be sure, the United States has not always had the best record in dealing with indigenous people.

This should not be taken as a sign that Greenlanders are eager to come to the United States. Denmark is trying to compensate the indigenous people who were harshly mistreated in this way $46,000 each in damages. Just that; Unlike calls for reparations in the United States, these reparations are paid to living people who suffered under an unjust policy, which is a completely different matter.

Many indigenous Greenlanders prefer the island to be an independent country. But this is not a viable solution, especially in today’s tense geopolitical atmosphere, where the Arctic is increasingly becoming a vital strategic region, with all major powers – the United States, Russia and China in particular – eyeing that region’s resources. Greenland has to be under someone’s defensive envelope, and even as a Danish possession, it falls under NATO protection, as if it belonged to the United States.

Denmark wants to maintain the status quo. But many indigenous people are dissatisfied with this status quo. Amarok Petersen notes:

The island has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, according to ResearchersIt is estimated that 81 out of every 100,000 people commit suicide annually.

She said of the Danes: “They took our resources. They took our bodies. Then they asked us to thank them.” “How do you thank someone who stole your future?”

Greenland’s indigenous people may not be happy under Denmark, and they’re not particularly interested in the United States either, but this is a constituency that the United States should at least talk to. Their future, more than anyone else’s, is what is under discussion here.
