SAN FRANCISCO – The Golden State Warriors have waived guard Seth Curry with the expectation that he will return to the team at some point within the first two months.
The move was necessary due to the Warriors’ lack of financial flexibility in the new salary cap environment. They are severely restricted at and just below the second arena, so they cannot afford an additional veteran’s minimum contract on their books until early November. The 15th and final spot on Golden State’s roster will remain vacant until the guard’s expected return.
Seth, Stephen Curry’s younger brother, spent the past few weeks at the team facility and on his only road trip in October to practice, but was deactivated for preseason games.
Seth Curry began his 11-year career with the franchise’s G League program in Santa Cruz, but then intentionally ventured elsewhere — to 10 NBA teams — preferring to chart his professional path outside of his brother’s shadow.
He came with a lot of shooting success. The younger Curry brother made 945 triples at a rate of 43.3%, the seventh highest in league history.
This summer, Seth decided the timing was right to join forces with Steve, who had long hoped to play with his brother on the NBA stage. It will be postponed, but the plan will remain in place even after this procedural waiver.
