Many candle manufacturers do not know how to feel social media stars. But the husband and wife team behind JD and Kate Industries take a look at what can happen if you take advantage of the spirit of humor on the Internet.
Its headquarters in Saint Lewis, JD, Kate Industries were created by JD and Kate Dobson. The company photographed a place by choosing a fairly sudden topics for its candles – Edgar Alan Bo, Apollo 11 – then writing a Farhan version to go with them.
The latest release of the company, a scented candle, “The Fall of Rome”, in which the flame burns the small wax buildings inside the jar, on a large scale on social media, thanks to its great description:
Do you think that the Roman individuals understood that their civilization was collapsing? Or did this gradually happen that they were able to ignore the warning signs – international trade collapses, and the Senate became a rubber character of the supreme leader, and political violence became expected while transferring power?
It is difficult to say, because it is impossible to imagine that you will be in this type of position. In any case – I hope you enjoy the candle!
It took JD, 48, Kate, 44 years old, away from filling out requests to discuss their business assets and the challenges that come when the product becomes commonly common.
This interview has been edited and intensified for clarity.
It is assumed that you are happy with the reaction of this candle?
Dinar Yes? We did not create to deal with this type of rise in demand. To get out of my small violin, we overcrowded last morning last night from candles.
Kate We had two nails before. In the past, we had to close the entire store. Our biggest height was ever – we have a candle “War 1812” where you can burn the White House, which became a virus on Twitter in 2021. Sales passed through the ceiling and I was happy until I was not happy. I cried. It was bad. We just had to close the store, and we took a week to deal with the requests.
How long have you been doing this?
Kate It will be 10 years next year. January 2016 was simpler and happy.
Why did you decide to marry candles and jokes?
Kate I love humor in unexpected places. I think when you surprise people, it is easier to be funny. We had this idea of a candle that was like Justin Trudeau, [former] Canadian Prime Minister, who was more popular in 2016 than he is now.
Was that the first candle?
Dinar no. Prepare yourself in your mind in early 2016 and imagine how the world began at the time. The first one we did was the candle of Vladimir Putin. At that time, perhaps they would have saved myopia, this was the cartoon, and we had a picture of him riding a horse without a shirt. The entire brand was all these jokes about this luxurious, ridiculous character. It was not long after the launch of this candle, we got media inquiries from the Russian ports that wanted to come to our home and photograph us. We were like, “no”
What made you choose candles in the first place?
Kate In our marriage, I think the guiding light is, if one of us has a funny idea, then we do that. I have just learned how to make candles in the kitchen. It took me six months. I was also doing it during a nap, when the children were perhaps 3 and 1. I started making them when JD was working and continued to say: “You have to show me how to make candles.” Finally, while I was doing something with the children, I told him, “Well – do this, then return and tell you the next step.” I have not made a candle since then.
Dinar It is not difficult to make candles. We both write the version. I make candles and Kate design the poster. And you will charge them and so on.
What is the best -selling candle?
Dinar Now it is the “fall of Rome” candle. I would like to say last week would be a “Boston Tea” candle.
Is it the concept first, then think about the fragrance? Or vice versa?
Dinar No no. We are largely indifferent to perfumes.
Do you have candles around your home?
Dinar It is funny, we are not really a candle.
Kate I think this is our success though. I think we are making candles for people who are not candles.
What do you do on the following?
Kate The collapse of the Bronze Age? We are surprised by the enthusiasm of ancient history. I thought the Americans would be interested in our history.
Dinar I also really want to have large fire from the London candle. I think I have already written some jokes for naming, in fact.
Kate I prefer if there is a fire. This is my first choice.
