The French government lost a vote with the confidence that Prime Minister Francois Bayro called on Monday, amid a widespread dispute over the planned austerity measures.
Bayro must now submit the government’s resignation to President Emmanuel Macron.
A total of 364 members of the National Assembly against the proposal voted, with 194 vote in favor.
The expected defeat was not widely surprising because the opposition indicated its intention not to support the Bayro minority government because of its austerity plans.
Bayro, in his position for less than nine months, was struggling to pay what he considers urgently the necessary reforms as France faces high government debts and levels of public spending are among the highest in Europe.
Macron is expected to accept Bayro’s resignation, but he is asked to stay in office until a successor is found.
