Dismantling the USAID and discounts in relief budgets over the next 3-5 years announced by other Western donors, including the UK (40 %), France (37 %), the Netherlands (30 %) and Belgium (25 %), threatening reverse contracts of progress in reducing accuracy with control.1.
These cuts – equivalent to 44 % of $ 1.6 billion in donor aid provided in 2022 to support nutrition goals in the World Health Assembly – will lead to hardship and death among the most vulnerable people in the world2. The effects of public health, economic growth and community stability are deep.
Severe malnutrition, or severe wasting, is the most deadly feeding forms and is responsible for up to 20 % of child mortality under the age of five, and affects 13.7 million children annually all over the world. I left without treatment, up to 60 % of the infected children may die3.
How Trump 2.0 reinstalls the flag
Protecting programs, such as community -based management, can reduce severe malnutrition, which combines examination, treatment and consulting, deaths to less than 5 %3 It was used in more than 70 countries. In 2022, the United States and other donors spent $ 591 million in the Economic Cooperation and Development Organization on severe treatment.2Which was identical to receiving countries.
The sudden withdrawal of donor support leaves millions of children with serious diseases without reaching these life -saving programs. It already undermines institutional capabilities, experiences and infrastructure of the data needed to provide basic nutrition services.
For example, in Nigeria, the withdrawal of advanced nutrition financing at the USAID Agency (USAID) means that the Helen Keeler International Charitable Society had to stop a program that provides nutrition services for 5.6 million children. In Sudan, approximately 80 % of the emergency kitchens are closed. In Ethiopia, supply of foods rich in nutrients used to treat about a million children suffering from severe malnutrition annually by May. The Net Net Global-a leading source of data on the risks of famine-is located in lethargy, which disrupts the early human planning systems and the customization of emergency resources.
The loss of donor financing also offers the purchase and distribution of ready -made therapeutic foods for use, which is a savior of life for severe malnutrition. The product comes as an intense dough for micro nutrients that contain peanuts, milk powder, sugar, oils, vitamins and minerals. The United States Agency for International Development has supported half of the world’s show4.
The effects of these cuts will be harsh. To clarify, here we evaluate their scale.
Millions of lives are in danger
In all, we estimate that the $ 290 million cuts in donor financing for severe malnutrition (see “feed financing collapse”) will cut 2.3 million children in the low and medium countries (LMICS). This would lead to 369,000 additional children’s death annually that could be prevented.

Among them, the end of the United States -funded programs (worth $ 128 million in 2022) alone will prevent a million children from reaching such treatments, causing 163,500 additional deaths annually.
These worst scenarios are based on donor exchange data for 2022 to treat severe wasting, derived from the system of reporting the creditor of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development through development, which is a global non -profit organization2 (See supplementary information). These treatments are included in the community management of severe malnutrition programs, which examine and treat children with severe malnutrition and follow them to prevent relapse after recovery.
Will it make the RFK JR JR Agenda infectiously?
Reducing all American and average financing to 35 % of other donors aid leads to $ 704 million in general financing for nutrition programs in general, and $ 290 million is less to treat acute malnutrition. These figures assume that the payments were similar to those in 2022, that the average discounts by 35 % for help announced by European donors will reduce 35 % nutrition financing, and that donor financing is compatible with the contributions of LMIC governments, as is often the case.
Lack of time to waste reports4 By the United Nations Fund for Children, UNICEF estimated that 1.2 million deaths were avoided in 2023 by treating 7.4 million children with severe malnutrition in 47 high -risk countries. Since 80 % of cases around the world were in these countries, we have increased these numbers to cover 100 % of the world to the world, to 9.3 million children treated and avoid 1.5 million deaths.
We calculated the percentage to reduce donor financing compared to the disbursement of 2022 and evaluated the number of children treated in 2022 now will not receive help. Likewise, we analyzed the number of deaths that were prevented from treatment in 2022 now will not be avoided.
Global consequences
Despite a shock, the number of deaths may be less, because aid discounts threaten a large group of nutrition support programs, including health, agriculture, school nutrition, water and sanitation. Soon, we may see many millions of children all over the world develop wasting, dwarf growth and microfinance.
