A German artist rejected a prize from a prominent international Photography Competition after revealing that its presentation was created by artificial intelligence (artificial intelligence).

Berlin -based Boris El Diggson won this year’s Sony World Award with his entry “Pseudomnesia: The Electrician”.

The strange black and white image shows two women of different generations – the older woman appears for the younger woman from behind.

The organizers said they were aware of some participation of artificial intelligence, but they said that there were “deliberate” attempts to mislead them.

El Diggson said he hoped his actions will open the conversation on the issue and lead to “separate competitions from the images created from artificial intelligence.”

El Diggson said in a joint statement on him Website It was a “monkey” in an attempt to open the conversation about artificially created images.

“Thank you for choosing my picture and making this historical moment, because it is the first image created from artificial intelligence to win the international photography competition (such).

He continued: “AI’s pictures and photography should not compete with each other in a prize. They are different entities. AI is not photography. So I will not accept the award.”

He said that he had presented as a “parasite of Corpo” to find out if the competitions “are ready for artificial intelligence images to enter. It is not.”

“It shows that at the present time, the world of photography surprised after this development that you can create photos similar to photography but do not need to get the skills and experience of photographers,” El Diggsen told CNN on Tuesday.

He said that artificial intelligence has left many photographers to feel “threatening and fear that they would lose their jobs that will happen.”

El Diggson said his intention was not to create trouble, but to open an important conversation.

“It was not a matter of winning anything,” he said. “I was just doing a test to see if they were familiar – like an infiltrator who penetrates a system that is not exploited, but to see if there are weaknesses.”

In other data on his website, he said he was informed of artificial intelligence participation organizers.

Organizers said that the year 2023 witnessed the largest number of participants in the history of 16 years of prizes. More than 415,000 photos were entered through competitions this year, with more than 180,000 qualified for professional groups.

Three contestants were chosen in the final, in addition to five to seven brief photographers, in each category. The pictures selected by photographers from more than 30 countries were filmed in locations ranging from an abandoned cement factory in China to the fish market in Somalia.

The World Photography Organization, which runs the competition, told CNN in a statement on Tuesday that during the exchange of the competition with Echa -Alawjsen before announcing it as a winner in the category on March 14, he confirmed the “joint construction” of this image using artificial intelligence.

The organizers said: “The creative category of the open competition welcomes many experimental methods for making images from blue and horrific patterns to advanced digital practices.”

“In this way, after our correspondence with Boris and the guarantees he presented, we felt that his entry had fulfilled the criteria of this category, and we supported his participation. In addition, we were looking to engage in a more deep discussion on this topic and welcomes Boris’s desire to dialogue by preparing brief questions with Huh for our website.

As it is [Eldagsen] He now decided to reject his prize, we have stopped our activities with him and in line with his desires that have removed him from the competition. Looking at his later deeds and statement, which referred to his deliberate attempts to mislead us, and thus nullify the guarantees he presented, we no longer feel that we are able to participate in a meaningful and constructive dialogue with him. ”

The statement said that the organizers are aware of “the importance of this topic and its impact on making pictures today.”

“While the elements of artificial intelligence practices are related to the technical contexts of the image industry, the awards have always been a platform for defending excellence and the skill of photographers and artists working in the center.”
