The Trump administration is facing a political uproar after the White House confirmed that the journalist had been inadvertently added to an insecure group chat in which US national security officials plan a military strike in Yemen.
Jeffrey Goldberg of Atlantic magazine I mentioned It has been added to a sign of signal messages that apparently included Vice Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete HegSeth.
He said he saw secret military plans for American strikes against the Houthi rebels, including weapons packages, targets and timing, two hours before bombs.
The report sparked a storm of criticism of opposition Democrats and fears between many Republicans.
Critics call for an investigation of leakage
Goldberg said he was added to a series of messages, apparently by chance, after receiving a call from a person who appeared to be the White House National Security Adviser Michael Waltz.
He told PBS in an interview: “If they would choose a wrong phone number, I mean at least that he was not a person who supported the Houthis, because they were actually distributing information I think could have been exposed to the lives of American service personnel who participated in this process.”
President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday afternoon that he was not aware of the Atlantic article.
“The attacks on the Houthis were very successful and effective,” White House journalist Caroline Levitte said in a statement.
“President Trump still has the utmost confidence in the national security team, including National Security Adviser Mike Walz.”
The Minister of Defense also defended the military operation discussed in the chat, noting its success. When pressed by correspondents, Higseth Goldberg criticized as a “deceptive and designer” journalist and resisted questions about the content of the messages.
Parliament Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, said that Breach Hafd was a mistake, but he argued that the chat showed “the highest officials doing their work and doing it well.”
Democratic lawmakers demanded the investigation, and they set the episode as a national security scandal.
“This is one of the most amazing violations of the military intelligence that I have read very long ago,” said Chuck Schumer, Democratic Leader of the Senate.
The head of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Roger Wekir, a Republican in the state of Mississippi, said his committee is planning to investigate the matter.
“It is definitely a source of concern,” he added. “It seems that the mistakes have been made.”
Vance does not agree with Trump
In his article, Goldberg, Atletantec Editor -in -Chief, wrote that he had received a call request on March 11 on the examination of the encrypted messaging application from an account claiming to be the Pallis.
He said he initially wondered whether group chat messages might be a trick until four days later, Saturday 15 March, when he was sitting in a car park in a supermarket, watching Communications Communications about the strike.
When he examined X for updates about Yemen, he wrote, he surprised to see reports of explosions in the capital of SANA.
The Houthi official published X while 53 people were killed In American air strikes.
The signal is generally used by reporters and Washington officials due to the safe nature of communications, the ability to create borrowed names, and send hidden messages.
Two days later, Goldberg said he had been added to a signal chat entitled “The Small Houthi PC group”.
Goldburg said that there are a number of accounts that seemed to belong to members of the Council of Ministers and National Security officials in the 18 -people chat.
Accounts called “JD Vance”, the name of the Vice President; “Higseth House”, Minister of Defense; And “John Ratcliffe”, Director of the CIA; It was among the names in the series.
Senior National Security officials from various agencies, including Tolsi Gabbard, director of National Intelligence in Trump, and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio.
At some point during calls about strikes, it seemed that the account that described “JD Vance” was not consistent with Trump, Goldberg said.
“I am not sure that the president realizes the extent of this inconsistency with his message to Europe at the present time,” wrote at about 8:15 on March 14.
“There is another danger to see a moderate rise to severe oil prices.
“I am ready to support the team’s consensus and keep these concerns for myself.
“But there is a strong argument for delaying this month, and doing the correspondence about the reason for the importance of this, knowing the location of the economy, etc.”
In a statement to the BBC on Monday, Fans William Martin spokesman said that the vice president “unambiguously supports the foreign policy of this administration.”
Martin said: “The president and the vice president had later talks about this and fully compatible,” Martin said.
The National Security Council confirmed many of the Atlantic Report.
“At this time, it appears that the series of reported messages is authentic. We are reviewing how an unintended number has been added to the series,” Branz Hughes spokesman told the BBC.
“The thread is evidence of deep and thoughtful political coordination among senior officials.”
Europe messages “” pathetic “explosion
Goldberg said officials also discussed the possibility of Europe to pay the price of protecting the main shipping corridors.
“Whether it is now or several weeks from now, it should be the United States that reopen these shipping corridors,” wrote the account associated with Waltz on March 14.
The message continued, saying that at the request of Trump, his team was working with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “to determine how to collect the associated cost and impose them on the Europeans.”
At one point in the thread, the Vance account acquired that the strikes will benefit the Europeans, because of their dependence on these shipping corridors, adding: “I just hate to save Europe again.”
The user was identified as HegSet has responded after three minutes: “VP: I share completely your hatred in the free European download. It is compassionate.”
