
Fusion energy, the result of two lighter atoms coming together to form a heavier atom, can release huge amounts of energy without harmful carbon pollution, making its potential widespread use a target for many. Not only would its use eliminate dependence on dirty energy sources, it could theoretically provide humanity with almost limitless clean energy at incredibly affordable prices.
By diversifying clean energy sources using nuclear energy, such as nuclear fusion, the atmosphere would contain fewer heat-trapping gases, which would cool the planet and lead to cleaner air and water, reducing pollution-related health problems in our communities.
Now, according to… AIPHowever, new paths to fusion science are emerging, which could bring the world closer to fusion energy.
While one of the traditional methods used in fusion energy experiments is single-shell implosion, where researchers ignite a central hotspot that then transmits a combustion wave through the fuel, a team recently conducted double-shell ignition experiments. Double shells, as the name suggests, have two shells — an outer shell that conducts energy inward, and a high-density inner shell that compresses fuel.
One of my authors the study, Sassi Palaniappan explained, according to AIP“The design allows for what physicists call ‘volume burning,’ where the fuel can ignite and burn more uniformly throughout its volume.”
While initial experiments with the double shell yielded no unusual results, after the team added a thin gold layer on the outer shell connection, they found they were able to suppress the instabilities that disrupt implosion. The result of this design was that neutron production was about 10 times higher than in previous double-shell attempts.

In addition, the inner shell is composed of metals with high atomic numbers, which will allow researchers to determine how heavy elements mix with the fuel used in these implosions, how extreme temperatures and pressure partition kinetic energy, and how radiation capture and re-release are affected. This will allow scientists to explore astrophysical phenomena as well as fusion energy.
These experiments represent an important step in determining how to scale up and stabilize fusion energy, which could enable widespread use of this clean, almost limitless and affordable energy.
However, the use of nuclear energy still involves concerns, including how to store nuclear waste safely, the possibility of links to weapons proliferation, and the drawback of high upfront costs that could prevent the development of projects and plants.
