“I can’t believe I’m standing here – the Walk of Fame,” she said, recalling that her first “connection” with Hollywood came as a teenager in New York, watching the iconic scene in which Roberts’ character strolls along Hollywood Boulevard.
“This is weird,” Paulson continued.
“I’m not saying I didn’t dream of fame. I did. I was walking around High School for the Performing Arts in Manhattan, the public school I graduated from in 1993, quoting lines from Julia Roberts movies, and my closet was full of pictures of her.”
She then admitted how deeply she admired Roberts.
“All it takes for a narcissistic teenage mind to become obsessed is for someone to say in passing, casually, ‘I look a little like her,’ and that’s it.”
“My quest to transform into her was born,” she added.
However, Paulson noted that the fantasy did not last long.
“I didn’t really consider that no one thought Julia Roberts’ time was over. No one was looking for a poor man’s version of her,” she explained.
Before concluding, she admitted to a painful realization, which was when she decided to make her own name in the industry.
“She got here on her own. I had to deal with the painful truth that her career was hers alone.”
