On a Fox News broadcast of “The Story” on Tuesday, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said that Vladimir Putin had never acknowledged there had been significant casualties in the war in Ukraine, and that “Russia has never been willing to admit, and has always been willing to suffer more than most countries. This kind of loss in the millions of casualties would not be tolerated by any other country, except Russia.”
Host Martha MacCallum asked: “The only side that hasn’t said it feels desperate about the amount of killing and all the deaths, in many cases, among these young men, many Russian soldiers, many Ukrainian soldiers, is Putin. Has Putin ever said this is a huge loss of life, and I have to come to the table and we have to find negotiations so the war ends?”
“He didn’t,” Whitaker replied. “But Russia has never been willing to admit, and has always been willing to suffer more than most countries. This is the kind of multi-million casualties that no other country, except Russia, would tolerate. At the same time, this is what they do for very small, if any, gains on the battlefield, and we have to accept reality as it is. I think that’s what President Trump is really good at, even through all the chaos and death and destruction.” “What we are seeing on the battlefield, he is still willing to see the peace agreement through and see if there is a possibility.”
