Power has been mostly restored after a major outage in San Francisco, which left 130,000 PG&E customers without power.

On Sunday morning, PG&E said It restored power to 110,000 customers. By the afternoon, service had been restored to about 4,000 additional customers. According to the utility company, a fire broke out in one of its substations, causing “significant and extensive” damage.

In a news conference Monday, PG&E said the fire at the substation at Mission Street and 8th Street started shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday, and the utility had to deactivate parts of the system to make it safe for firefighters to fight the blaze.

As of Monday afternoon, the cause of the fire was not known.

PG&E said Sunday that it expects all customers affected by the substation outage to have power by 2 p.m. Monday at the latest. However, a PG&E spokesperson said Monday that although 96% of the outages would be resolved by 2 p.m. Monday, the estimated restoration time for remaining customers had been pushed back to 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Services said Sunday that PG&E will establish a center community resource center, Along with city employees, for those without electricity, before an expected wave of heavy rain from Atmospheric river. Mayor Daniel Lowry said there is a small business outreach plan to let businesses affected by power outages know they can file claims with PG&E.

“Some customers are starting to get power back with PG&E restoring power to an additional 4,000 homes, but there are still 17,000 customers without power. If you have an affected small business, you can file a claim at http://pge.com/claim“,” Laurie said.

At the peak of the outage, the utility company said about 130,000 customers were affected.
