It has left contracts of drilling and oil spills their mark on the scene, but there is now more hope for recovery more than ever, thanks to a revolutionary technique using mushrooms.
In a conversation interview with Urgent future with Jesse Damiani (Urgentfuturespod), expert Daniel Stevenson shares her experiences with mycoremediation.
“I have seen contaminated sites when you enter, it seems that Mordor or something, like a truly destructive landscape that is so contaminated that the soil is black with oil,” she says. “The sites that fire on hot days due to the chemicals in the soil where there is no one plant or worm.”
Usually, life forms that live in healthy soils – plants, worms, etc. – cannot flourish in the toxic conditions of oil driver. But there is one life shape that can: fungi.
“Therefore, as we apply some fungal fungi, a little water, and perhaps some wood chips free of waste in the city,” explains Stephenson. “Within three months, more than 50 % of organic pollutants in the soil disappeared.”
The appropriate types of fungi can actually destroy the oil and use it as nutrients to help the fungus to grow. This transforms the toxic substance once into something useful for the environment so that other species-plants and animals-can move.
“Now there are plants that grow as they have not been able to grow before,” Stevenson says. “This means that there are upcoming worms. The soil supports life. There are flowers growing. Now there are birds.”
This is a big deal, given that the previous protocols to clean the oil spills concerned only remove polluted soil. He left that area without a fertile layer of surface soil, which makes almost impossible to grow anything without further restoration – at the same time, the soil that was removed was toxic and had to be thrown somewhere.
Mycoremediation is a step towards real recovery.
“It is very nice and inspiring to see the type of transformation, cleaning, repair and renewal that can happen at this short time with relatively few inputs,” says Stevenson. “Moreover, as soon as these inputs are placed, this work in the beginning, as you know, tends to seize it, and the renewal continues to happen.”
