One airline is discounting economy class seats

People considering travel who find it rude when the people in front of them on the plane recline in their seats have a new ally.

That ally will be WestJet, a prominent Canadian airline that moves people around the world. WestJet recently announced All economy class seats on its passenger aircraft will now have a “fixed recline” design. In other words, those who pay for the cheaper seats will no longer be able to lie down. There will still be some reclining seats in both the ‘extended comfort’ section of the plane and in the premium cabin, but it looks like most passengers will now be on a level playing field when it comes to the angle of their seat backs.

According to WestJet, this means its Boeing 747 planes will now have an extra row of seats, and you can expect them to be rolled out by the end of the year. This could also lower ticket prices per seat, in theory.

On the other hand, the more rows there are in a level, the less space is available per person. This could also be a problem for customers who hate losing access to something that has been standard on airplanes for years. However, those of us who find it a bit inappropriate when the person in front of us decides to lie down probably won’t mind.

As always, just remember that other people on the plane will probably hate being there as much as you do, and adjust your behavior accordingly.
