Nine dead in a mass shooting in South Africa

At least nine people were killed and 10 others were injured in a shooting in the western town of Bakersdale Johannesburg in South Africa.

Gunmen in two cars reportedly opened fire on a bar in the town and continued shooting as they fled the scene. South African police said that a manhunt for the suspects involved in the shooting had begun.

South AfricaPublic broadcaster SABC initially reported 10 people killed but later revised the death toll in a post on X.

A police spokesman in Gauteng province, where the crime occurred, told AFP: “Ten people were killed. We have no details about their identity.”

The incident occurred “just before 1:00 a.m. local time” (11:00 p.m. GMT) in Tambo Municipality, resulting in “nine people killed and 10 others injured,” SAPS said.

“It was reported that about 12 unidentified suspects riding in a white Kombi and a silver sedan opened fire on bar patrons and continued to fire indiscriminately as they fled the scene,” police said.

“The bar is licensed,” the statement added.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities are working to identify the victims.

“Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations, together with the Crime Detection Tracking Unit, launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in a multiple shooting incident during the early hours of Sunday 21 December 2025,” police said.

AFP quoted Fred Kekana, acting commissioner of Gauteng province, where the crime occurred, as saying: “We are still busy obtaining data. Our national crime and management team has arrived.”

The Independent The South African Police Service has been contacted for comment.

“The regional crime scene management team has arrived and a team from the local criminal records centre, as well as our serious crime investigation team, crime intelligence and the regional crime investigation team are at the scene,” Mr Kekana told the SABC.

On 6 December, gunmen killed 12 people, including a three-year-old child, at a hostel in Pretoria, which was reportedly selling illegal alcohol.
