New Jersey police chief faces domestic violence charges, prosecutor says

BOSTON — A New Jersey police chief faces domestic violence charges in Massachusetts after prosecutors accused him of assaulting a woman at a hotel earlier this year.

Carmen Veneziano, who leads the Totowa, New Jersey, police department, was charged Thursday with kidnapping and three counts of domestic assault and battery, officials in Suffolk County, Massachusetts said.

In a brief statement on Sunday, prosecutors alleged that Veneziano held a woman captive and assaulted her throughout the night on September 14, in a hotel room in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood.

Police in New Jersey arrested Veneziano on Friday, and he is expected to be arraigned on Monday in Boston. An attorney for Veneziano was not immediately listed in court records.

Totoa Mayor John Coero said he learned of the charges on Friday and suspended Veneziano without pay later that day.

“Although I have not seen the specific charges in writing, I have been informed by the District Attorney’s Office that these charges are serious in nature and are considered felonies,” Coero said in a statement.

Prosecutors said more details will be revealed when Veneziano is arraigned.
