Megadeth lead singer has revealed that the condition affecting his hands is the reason behind his decision to retire after a farewell tour in support of their upcoming final album.
The thrash metal icons will release their self-titled album next month and the band will tour Canada in February and March before dates in Europe in the summer followed by a return to North America.
Now introduce the singer and guitarist. He further elaborated on the reasons for ending his remarkable career, saying the effects of “Duppuytren’s contracture” on his hands made it “really painful” to continue playing.
Mustaine explains to the interviewer how the condition affects him, telling MariskalRockTV: “It would make my finger go down like this.”
“It started really starting to bunch up a little bit,” he explained. “And then if you look at my fingertips, they’re pretty arthritic. So, all those bumps make it really painful to play with.”
He plans to undergo surgery to stop the condition from progressing, but not before the farewell tour dates.
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth also stated, “If I wait until my hand is in trouble and I try it and it doesn’t work, well, I’ve toured everywhere, said goodbye to everyone and I’m not going to leave things undone or unfinished.”
Dupuytren’s contracture, formerly known as Viking’s disease, permanently bends the fingers and usually begins as small, hard nodules just under the skin of the palm.
