Los Angeles police said Kiefer Sutherland was arrested and charged with assaulting a taxi driver

Actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested Monday after he allegedly physically assaulted and threatened a taxi driver, police said.

Sutherland, 59, was arrested at Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Boulevard in Hollywood after officers responded to a report of an assault around 12:15 a.m., Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terzis said via email on Tuesday.

“The investigation determined that the suspect, later identified as Kiefer Sutherland, entered a shared vehicle, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats toward the victim,” Terzis said.

The confrontation was verbal, not physical, and unfolded after the driver repeatedly refused to let Sutherland cancel the trip and let him off, according to a source close to the investigation.

The source said Sutherland asked the driver three times to let him out, but the driver refused. When the driver called police, Sutherland remained at the scene and was cooperative, the source said.

Representatives for Sutherland did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday night.

The victim did not suffer any injuries requiring medical treatment at the scene, Terzis said, adding that the investigation is continuing.

Sutherland was booked into jail shortly after 4 a.m. on suspicion of making criminal threats. He was set bail of $50,000 and was released about seven hours later, records show. He was scheduled to appear in court on February 2.

It was first reported by NBC Los Angeles Sutherland arrested.

Sutherland made a mark as a rich kid, heartthrob and sometimes bad boy on the big screen in the 1980s before hitting his stride on TV’s “24” in the 2000s. His father is the late actor Donald Sutherland.
