Lily Collins shared her two cents on the recent decision her character Emily Cooper made in Netflix The hit rom-com series, Emily in Paris.

Speaking about Cooper’s latest romance with an Italian guy, the 36-year-old actress had a candid conversation with PEOPLE aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

“I loved it,” Collins began.

She went on to explain the pivotal role each of Cooper’s love interests played in better understanding her own needs, saying, “I feel like each person that Emily is with teaches her a lot about what she needs and what she doesn’t need, what she wants and what she doesn’t want,” noting, “which I think is very real in our lives.”

“I think there was this kind of surreal dream that came with Marcelo,” Collins continued.

“and [Emily] He truly appreciates, respects and loves him as a human being. But I think she admitted that this wasn’t the life she wanted and she wasn’t done exploring herself yet. “It wasn’t that it would have been a bad life, it just wouldn’t have been the right and fulfilling life for her at this moment.”

Before concluding, she said, “So I really loved that she was brave enough to make that decision. As painful as it was, it was done with love and respect. And I appreciated the way they kind of said goodbye.”
