American prison systems are chaos. Many of our nation’s prisons, at the state level and the federal level, are crowded. The prisoners seem to have no enough, and the old saying about the hands of inactivity is that it is the Devil’s workshop. Our prisons are foci of violence, and often, younger prisoners get a crash path for how they are better and more effective when their work period ends in The Crowbarars.
Can we learn something or two Japan? Japan has the same percentage of its imprisoned population as we do. But they seem to be better in managing the prison system.
A modern piece of the city’s magazine has some An interesting points to make. But I think they miss one or two main things from Japan.
American federal prisons are degraded and crowded, which contributes to violence between prisoners and undermining rehabilitation opportunities. But thanks to the pumping of federal funds that a single beautiful bill declares, the prison office has an opportunity to clean things. Since BOP weighs these repairs and others, you should look at Japan, where prisons are spacious, effective, and turning free to a large extent.
Federal prisons are currently about 10 percent on the capabilities. In high -security BOP lifts, the number is 23 percent. Plame prisons are subject to turmoil, including Riots in prisonViolence and sexual assaults. In fact, between 2020 and 2023, I reported almost American prisons 5000Sexual assaults on prisoners.
These are unbearable numbers, and although one of the clear answers is “building larger and newer prisons” in addition to the renewal of some ancient parts (alcatraz), if it is proven, we still have more. And yes, Japan works better in all these measures:
In contrast, Japanese prisons operate in 47 percent of the capacityIn 2023, their facilities were not seen, no riots or widespread disturbance In decadesAnd they reach a lot of less attacks on prisoners. The country recorded only 25 attacks on prisoners, there are no attacks on reform officers, and one escape through the entire prison system Between 2017 and 2021Note numbers, given that Japanese prisons imprison 42,000 prisoners in 2022. American federal prisons, in contrast to that, RecordMore than 3000 “less dangerous assault” against prisoners in 2024 alone, in a system with nearly 158,000The detainees.
Many of the solution of Japan include maintaining its colleagues busy. We used to do that – work farms, chain gangs, and the like. The mere cultivation of prisoners will not grow part of their food will not only keep them busy (and tired), but will also provide them with some useful skills, along with the crime. Certainly, make them work, even if this work concludes licensing boards or building more classic gray government offices and chairs. This practice has greatly ended, but there is no reason we could not return.
Japan greatly Reducing prison violenceWith two major strategies. First, more prisons were built to reduce congestion. Many Japanese prisons at home in individual cells, which Reduces tensionsAmong the number of communications between the prisoners. Overcrowding in many American federal prisons negatively affects the mental health of guests, which can lead to violence.
Second, Japan imposes strict tables centered around work for guests, at all levels of security. After breakfast and with some rest, Japanese prisoners work from 8 am to 5 pm
So it works for Japan.

But there is another issue, a cultural issue, it is certain in playing here. Japan is completely different from the United States. It is a very civilized country inhabited by a very civilized people, but the nature of their civilization is different from us. While Japan is a high -confident society, it is a society that accepts power much more than independent Americans with inscribed thinking. Japan is also – this is important – a cultural and ethnic homogeneous society. Japan is full of overwhelming majority in Japanese, and while this changes somewhat in recent years, migration to Japan is still tightly controlled. Japan’s residents are heading to a decline. The youngest Japanese people have no sufficient children. But it seems that Japan has decided to go down.
Are these cultural and ethnic issues sufficient to make a change even in the prisoners ’residents? I think they may. Before we start any wholesale application of Japanese systems on our different correction facilities, this is something that requires some attention. Although making prisoners work, yes, it is difficult to see a negative side of it. Make them grow some calamities. Make them sweat. And make them earn at least part of keeping them.
