Instagram is rolling out a new tool called Your Algorithm that gives you direct control over the videos that fill your Reels tab. Your interests change over time. Now your feed can move with you in real time.
Instagram says this new feature uses artificial intelligence to help you see and adjust the topics that make up your Reels with just a few taps. It has already started rolling out in the US and will be rolling out globally in English soon.

Why Instagram created your own algorithm for Reels
Instagram wants your feed to reflect what matters to you now. Its algorithm gives you a clear view of what topics Instagram thinks you’ll like and then lets you edit them while you’re watching Reels.
First, click on the reels icon. This button looks like a power button inside a rounded rectangle at the bottom of the screen.

How to see and control your Reels algorithm
When you see Reel, search for Small icon in the upper right corner. It looks like two lines with hearts.
Click on this icon to open your algorithm. From there, you can direct your feed using three controls.
1) See your top interests
At the top of the screen, you’ll see a list of topics that Instagram thinks match your interests. This gives you a quick overview of what makes up your reels.
2) Set your preferences
You can write the topics you want to see more or less of. Your Reels feed updates based on those changes. You can also choose what you want to see less by tapping Add, then entering the topic you want Instagram to reduce in your feed.
Social media verification systems are losing steam as scammers buy checkmarks to appear legitimate
3) Share your algorithm
If you want to show your friends the topics that make up your feed, tap Option to participate in the story on your algorithm screen. Instagram will open the story preview. Then tap on your story to post it or to close friends if you want a smaller group to see it.
Instagram says this is just the beginning. The company plans to bring the same level of control to the Explore tab and other parts of the app soon.

What does this mean for you?
This update makes you responsible for the content you spend time with. Instead of hoping an algorithm reads your signals, you can now tell it what you want. This means fewer random videos and more topics that reflect your current interests. It can also help you discover new creators that fit what you enjoy now.

Key takeaways for Kurt
Your algorithm gives you a new, long-awaited level of control. It makes Reels more personal and reduces the guesswork that often shapes social feeds. As this expands to more parts of Instagram, your experience may feel more intentional and less stressful.
