Gov. JB Pritzker (D-Ill.) said Thursday on MSNBC’s “The Briefing” that ICE agents should be charged for violating local and state laws.
Host Jen Psaki said: “You said on Sunday that you’re looking to prosecute ICE agents who violate the law. What can you tell us about that? What would that look like?”
“We don’t know if anyone is going to be held accountable at the federal level,” Pritzker said. “So we’re looking at all the options at the local level with the district attorney, with the prosecutors to go after people when they violate Illinois law, when they violate local law. And we think that, you know, when they’re driving through an area, someone yells at them and they decide to just throw a tear gas canister.” Getting out of a car while driving toward someone on the side of the road, it seems to me, is a violation of Illinois law. So the question is, can we hold officers and agents accountable when they do something like this? If it’s a police officer, we can, if it’s you or I or just a regular person throwing, you know, a tear gas canister out the side of a window at people, we can hold them accountable. So it seems they should take responsibility for breaking it Local and international laws.”
