Capcom’s long-awaited ninth installment in the beloved action-horror series, Resident Evil Requiemis almost out, launching on February 27, 2026. The wait feels like it’s been forever, as most of its marketing has been top-secret, and the big reveal of Leon S. Kennedy at The Game Awards 2025 is clearly what Capcom was adamant about hiding.
In case you missed it, Grace Ashcroft and veteran Leon S. will both appear. Kennedy as the lead duo, as many expected, as they share the same amount of screen time. This means that Capcom is aiming to mix horror and action again, and that suggests something major to me.
The combination of RE2 and RE4 gameplay feels exceptional
I’m sure many fans will agree with that Remake of Resident Evil 2 It is one of the best titles the series has to offer when it comes to horror, right behind it Resident Evil 7.
Many would argue that she carries this trait Resident Evil 1 Remake, but (hot shot incoming) I’m not a fan of this title, and I very much hope it can be rebuilt once again In the RE engine it’s third person, but that’s beside the point.
boss massKoshi Nakanishi highlighted how Grace Ashcroft’s play sectors will feel Resident Evil 2where players will be left fighting for their lives on the edge of their seats, as Grace’s weakness and unfamiliarity with the outbreak is about to deliver some truly terrifying sequences for both character and player.
We’ve already seen a strong example of this with the first gameplay reveal, where the old hag or “Big Mama” (as most people refer to her) chases Grace through a chronic care facility, before Leon rescues her, as was recently revealed. It’s not as if action will be completely absent from Grace’s parts either, so there’s a fighting element to explore in her character as well.
With Nakanishi stating that Lyon’s playing style is based on… Resident Evil 4 Remake, tells me what Capcom is aiming for mass To go beyond the beloved titles of 2005 and 2023, while simultaneously running some of the best horror and action films in the series.
Leon should be at his peak in this brand new title and will be pushed to his limits more than ever before. I’m afraid of what the latter means (I don’t want our favorite hero to die), but Kennedy is at his peak and the descriptions of “martial arts” and “melee moves” are in mass It indicates that we will see the most expansive and creative combat system yet.
It’s not just elements from RE2 and RE4 that will make it great
Obviously there is still a lot more to it mass must be provided; The addition of Leon’s ax appears to be a replacement for the knife from what we saw in Resident Evil 4 remake, and it looks like we could also see a dynamic weapon “stealing” system, as the trailer shows Leon getting his chance to use the enemy’s chainsaw on them.
The collaboration with Porsche doesn’t appear to be set for cinematic scenes either. I fully expect players to get multiple opportunities to drive around Raccoon City and other local areas we haven’t seen yet masssimilar to the short boat traverse section in RE4.
Grace also brings something completely new to the table; In the franchise’s main titles, we’ve never seen a character as clearly frightened as Grace massat least at first, with Nakanishi calling her a “scaredy cat”, before she eventually grows braver as the story progresses.
It will be interesting to see how the new “rookie” (in terms of combat experience with monstrous enemies), Grace, will interact with Leon S. An older and seasoned Kennedy, who has fought many deadly enemies, and how the juxtaposition of horror and action will impact the overall experience.
From what I’ve seen so far, it’s shaping up to be Capcom’s best work in the series, and a near-perfect celebration of its 30th anniversary. Let’s just hope it’s executed well.
