Google agreed to pay 28 million dollars (21.5 million pounds) to settle a lawsuit claiming that white and Asian employees have received better job salaries and opportunities than workers from other ethnic backgrounds, says a law firm representing the demands.
The technology giant confirmed that he had “reached a decision” but he rejected the allegations against it.
Anna Canto said that the case he filed in 2021 by the former Google employee, that workers of Spanish, Latin, indigenous Americans and other backgrounds began in lower salaries and levels of jobs from their white and Asian counterparts.
The settlement was granted preliminary approval by Judge Charles Adams from the Santa Clara County Supreme Court in California.
The case submitted by Mrs. Kanto against Google relied on a leaked internal document, which was claimed that employees of some ethnic backgrounds reported a decrease from a similar work.
The practice of starting salaries and the level of job has strengthened on previous salaries, historical race and ethnic disparity, according to Mrs. Canto’s lawyer.
The collective lawsuit was filed for at least 6,632 people who were employed by Google from February 15, 2018 and December 31, 2024, according to Reuters.
Cathy Kobble, one of the lawyers who represented them, praised “the courage of both diverse employees and ally who reported their salaries and leaked that data to the media.”
Ms. Copel added: “The inequality in suspected wages is easily hidden without this type of collective procedure from employees.”
The technology giant denied that she was discriminated against any of its employees.
“We have reached a decision, but we continue to disagree with allegations that we have dealt with anyone differently, and we remain committed to paying, employing and settling all employees fairly,” a Google spokesman told BBC.
Earlier this year, Google joined a growing list of American companies that give up obligations to the principles of diversity, fairness and integration (Dei) in their employment policies.
Meta, Amazon, Pepsi, McDonald’s, Walmart and other Dei programs.
It comes as US President Donald Trump and his allies attacked the DEI policies regularly.
Since his return to the White House, Trump has ordered government agencies and its contractors to eliminate these initiatives.
