Throw the world rankings. Ignore expectations. It’s time for Redondo Union vs. Mira Costa in the Gulf Basketball League on Friday night in Redondo Union. When these rivals meet in the South Bay, anything can happen.
Redondo Union is ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times and is a likely playoff team in the Southern Open Division. Under coach Reggie Morris Jr., the Seahawks (18-3) have proven themselves against top teams, led by SJ Madison, Chase Holley and Chris Sanders. Mira Costa (19-3) is ranked No. 19 and is led by junior guard Pax Bell, who is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds.
The key to this game is to press the entire field which works best. Redondo Union likes to get going fast and create scoring chances with its defense. Mira Costa isn’t afraid to do the same.
“They like pressure and we like pressure,” Mira Costa coach Neil Perlmutter said.
Watching the student sections is also fun in this game. They’re surfers, volleyball players, baseball players, soccer players, softball players, swimmers — they’re all getting in on the action.
The rematch will take place in the final regular-season game on Feb. 3 at Mira Costa.
