ZAVI, the vaccine alliance, provides vaccines for about half of the world’s children. For decades, governments, institutions and private groups around the world provided the funding it needs to buy, store and distribute vaccines at a low cost for low and medium resources.
But the leaked documents, which were informed first New York TimesIt was revealed that the Trump administration has created lists of financing projects planning to stop support, including Gavi.
Dr. Sanya Nishtar, CEO of Ghafi, spoke of time, with the passage of time about what this might mean to the health of the world.
This interview has been intensified and edited for clarity.
Have you received any official notice from the United States government about reducing financing?
We have enjoyed the support of both parties in Congress over the past 24 years, since the creation of Gavi. This includes support during the last Trump administration. We were preparing to have a discussion with them on how to run the budget. About 10 days ago, Congress approved the draft continuity law, and Javi’s funding was part of this bill. My colleagues and I were to explore ways to conduct a discussion with them on how to activate this budget. This list, this news – we are really interested in hearing it.
If the United States government stops financing it to Joy, what will happen?
This is about children’s lives. This is about a million children who die if the financing is withdrawn. It comes to a settlement for global health security if the financing is withdrawn.
The United States includes about 13 % to 14 % of our budget. If this budget is reduced, this translates into 75 million children that are not vaccinated. This, in turn, means that more than a million people will not be saved. This is just one of the repercussions.
The other dimension is completely different, and it relates to global security. GAVI vaccines are a column in the global response to health security. Whenever there is a general healthy emergency, and the more there is an issue in need to fill vaccines, we maintain vaccine stocks for Ebola, cholera and meningitis. When going to 2026, we will also keep vaccine stocks for MPOX as well. Whenever there is an outbreak or a state of emergency, we fill out inventory.

The United States does not only bring dollars on the table. They are important technical partners for the entire global health system, and for the aerial. Last year, for example, when an MPOX emergency case occurred, we summoned the emergency response box. This is a fund that was created after joining Gavi – a $ 500 million fund, and its purpose is to make money available as soon as health emergency strikes. We put it in place after learning from Covid-19, because during the epidemic, the money was not available on the first day of investment in vaccines.
Last year, with this fund, within three days of the World Health Organization, which agrees to a MPOX vaccine, we were able to charge vaccines to African countries that it needed to contain fascism there. That was possible because we worked closely with the United States government, which wanted to donate vaccines from its stock. We have worked closely to coordinate inventory transfer. So the United States is a very important partner in the response system that the world has created to respond to emerging infections. We really want the system to work [continue to] Work closely with them.
Are you looking for alternative sources of financing?
We have 44 private and private entities and institutions. We communicate with them, of course, and they are watching. We expand our donor base. Some countries that were recipients of Gavi are now donated – Indonesia is an example. But the contribution of 14 % to the budget is important. It is difficult for other donors to fill that gap.
Public health leaders have talked about how the decreasing role in the United States will open the door for China to become a pioneer in health. Will China be a possibility to be a giving of Joy?
We talk to all countries of the world. Currently, China is not a major contributor to Javi.
Can they be?
All countries of the world are likely to be donor. We work very non -political. We are in the field of saving lives. We are in the transfer of neutral stocks to any country in the world when needed. We really look to work with this [U.S.] The government bears the importance of the need to continue to support.
What will the Trump administration tell why it is extremely important to continue dry financing?
I may talk to them about three things. First, I would like to explain to them that this is about saving the lives of children. Vaccination is one of the general health miracles. It is one of the most important general health interventions created on this planet. I would like to explain what the effects of their withdrawal – one of a million children die in the countries of the world who plan with foreign policy relations, 40 of them in Africa.
Second, with humility, I would like to make it clear to them that the world without a dry is a more dangerous world. Because we know that infectious diseases do not know limits. The capabilities created by Gavi are unique. No other international body can put money on the table on zero on zero to finance vaccine application facilities and fill out inventory. If we are removed from the equation, there is no way to become Ebola in the bud in Africa, there is no way to prevent MPOX from reaching the plane and reaching your beaches.
The number three may not be well understood. Javi is not a charity. We are a multilateral organization. We move towards the country’s sustainability.
When we start supporting countries by offering vaccines, countries begin to pay a certain percentage of this vaccine. When the economic situation of a country improves, its share increases from Copayment. In the end, they take over the entire payment for the same vaccines. Supports Javi [such] “The exits.” Since our construction, out of 78 countries we originally supported, 19 of our support came out. Indonesia came out and is now donor. India came out, and it is very likely that it will be donated in 2026. African countries have come out. We create a way towards sustainability. We create a way towards the country’s move so that it owns a state of its general health agenda.
Last year, countries paid a little more than $ 200 million of defenders towards vaccine. To move forward in 2026, countries will pay 50 % of their vaccinations. We say we want to manage ourselves from work. This model of development is unique for Gavi.
We do not have 200 offices in the field. I would like to explain to them that we are exactly the organization that should work with it to prove to the world how the organization that is directed towards results at low operational costs, with a fixed path for countries to move and become self -sustainable, is an example.

In all fields, this administration wonders why taxpayers in the United States support programs that mainly benefit other countries, and Gavi may fit with this. How do you respond?
Even if you take children’s life outside the equation – which I think is the most thing that no one can say, but still, let’s take it from the equation – there are two other reasons to support Gavi. One is global health security. We get out of the equation would reduce the world’s ability to fight the disease, and will serve as compromise on yourselves.
Second, there is a very important commercial equation here, because Gavi spent more on the vaccines provided by American companies more than any other country in the world. Gavi funded the purchase of life rescue vaccines $ 4 billion from American companies from 2012-2023. This excludes Covid-19 [vaccines]. They actually return from Jafi more than they give us. if [the U.S.’] Funding decreases, we will buy less vaccines and serve fewer countries. Their pharmaceutical industries also take a blow.
How do you try Javi to avoid such a shortage in the future and rely less on donors like the United States?
This is another learning from Covid-19. Last year, we put a tool called the African vaccine manufacturing accelerator. We have set $ 1.2 billion for financing, which aims to stimulate the development of sustainable commercial vaccines in the African continent. It is an important part of the equation of African countries to be really sovereign when it comes to manufacturing vaccines. If a vaccine manufacturer on the continent obtains the World Health Organization or the World Health Organization or approval of one of its vaccines, we will provide them with a prominent batch. It is an incentive for local investors until they know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and if they invest, they have the ability to get their money and earn profits forward.
