The fire marshal’s office says the risk of a live Christmas tree fire increases every day, according to a spokesperson.

Trending Stories:

More than a third of Christmas tree fires occur in January and create a dangerous situation.

The spokesman said dried trees could quickly catch fire, which could lead to catastrophic property losses.

“The longer the real tree stays inside, the dryer it gets and the more dangerous it becomes,” State Marshal Kevin Reardon said. “Dry trees burn very quickly, and if they catch fire, everything around them is at risk – property and lives alike. We strongly urge Ohioans to start the new year safely by getting those real trees out of their homes, garages, or porches, and disposing of them safely and responsibly.”

The spokesperson added that people are encouraged to keep their real Christmas trees well watered to reduce the risk of fires.

When it’s time to dispose of Christmas trees, residents should consult local guidelines on how to do so properly.

Many communities offer tree recycling programs or specific pickup/delivery services, which can help ensure safe and responsible disposal of trees.
