The study was conceived and planned by AC and NAH as chairs of the H3Africa Data Analysis Working Group who made initial contacts to bring on partners. MR contributed to improving the strategy, securing funding, negotiating agreements, strengthening partnerships, and sponsoring this publication. Saadeh initiated ethics and governance processes and worked with FT to communicate with each participating group. FT provided overall supervision, arranged meetings and managed legal operations. NS was responsible for sample quality assessments and shipping, including permits. The partner principal investigators are IA (Libya), YH (Tunisia), LM (Rwanda), IK (Kenya), MED (Kenya), AL (Democratic Republic of the Congo), MC (Angola), C. Masimirembwa (Zimbabwe) and YF (Mauritius), who led sample collection, prioritization of existing samples for this study, community engagement, and obtaining ethical approvals at the site level. Members of the writing group for this paper are as follows: MR, HE, FT, MED, ZC, YH, YF and IA; AC and NAH reviewed several drafts. Figures were generated by MED and ZC. Additional co-authors from the individual study sites participated and had the opportunity to critically review the paper, and each accepts responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of their contribution to the paper, and they are: NB, DB, MB, NC, MC, CC, GC, ND, ME, NF, AG, M.
