Doug Martin’s death: Agent says former NFL star had mental health issues

Former NFL star Doug Martin’s agent provided clarification of the circumstances surrounding his death on Monday when he issued a statement on behalf of the late player’s family.

Athletes First CEO Brian Murphy said the retired runner had been dealing with mental health issues in the days before Martin’s family asked authorities in California to participate. Martin died on Saturday after an incident while in police custody.

“On a personal level, Doug has faced mental health challenges that have profoundly impacted his personal and professional lives,” the statement read. “In the end, mental illness proved to be the one opponent Doug couldn’t escape.

“Following recent media reports about Doug’s sudden death, the family would like clarification of the circumstances. Doug’s parents were seeking medical help for him and contacted local authorities for support. Feeling disoriented and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s house two doors away, where he was taken into custody by police. What happened while he was in custody is being investigated.”

Oakland Police also released more information about Martin’s death.

“Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a residential invasion in Oakland,” police said in a news release. “While officers were attempting to arrest him, a brief struggle occurred. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive.

He added, “Paramedics went to the scene, provided medical assistance, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died.”

Police said they have been in contact with Martin’s family since the incident on Saturday and the situation remains under investigation.

Martin’s death was announced Sunday. He was 36 years old.
