The playing of the US national anthem was interrupted before an NBA game between the Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies in London on Sunday by someone pleading with the United States to “leave Greenland alone.”
Vanessa Williams sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the match at the O2 Arena. As it was nearing the end of that song, the heckler unleashed his rage. The call led to applause from some of the audience members.

President Donald Trump has insisted on US control of Greenland in Denmark since he took office for the second time last year.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, is home to an important US military base, and has taken on increasing strategic importance as melting ice opens up new shipping lanes and access to a wealth of natural resources.
On Friday, Trump went a step further. He said he would consider imposing new tariffs on countries that challenge his plans for a US takeover of Greenland.

“I may impose tariffs on countries if they do not agree to Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” he said.
His latest comments have alarmed Denmark and other NATO allies, prompting forces from several European countries – including France, Germany, Sweden and Norway – to deploy to Greenland to take security measures.

“The Star-Spangled Banner” was heavily criticized while being performed before sporting events abroad. This issue occurred prior to two distinct WWE live events in 2025. Canadian fans also booed the US national anthem at the 4 Nations Face Off and before an MLS match.
