Clean and safe lake water is an important part of the Finnish identity. In recent decades, interest in the condition of a lake water has increased. Land use and climate change creates new challenges to maintain water quality. It is also expected that harmful bacteria flowers will become more frequent in the future as a result of stinging.
A large number of public and private funds are invested in the restoration measures of the lake, but these efforts do not always produce the desired results.
Animal plankton plays a major role in the field of energy and nutrients
He has PhD research At Jyväskylä University, Finland, MA use Jaakko Litmanen modeling to the biological molecule to study the composition of the plant plankton community in the Viziagifi Lake, as well as water flea meals and entered the pallor for seven years.
“The interactions between the community of plant plankton and animal plankton are decisive in controlling the flowers of blue bacteria,” explains to Tamman. “Biocructed particles, such as fatty acids and dyes produced by algae, can be used in conjunction with mathematical methods of modeling the composition of the plant plankton and the diet of animal plankton.”
The study of nutrition habits in animal plankton can provide new visions in both energy transport and bicycle ride.
“Water fleas are often the most important algae shepherds in lakes, and it has been widely studied,” says Litman. “However, the Callpeeds Calanoid may be the dominant algae shepherds during parts of the summer, but it was largely overlooked due to the challenges of their cultivation in the laboratory.
New visions in food web dynamics
In monitoring the restoration efforts and environmental changes, vegetable plankton societies are often identified using microscopic examination, although the basic attention is often in the blue bacteria specifically.
“Slow and costly microscopy can be replaced by algae with fatty acids and diseases when determining the level of species is necessary,” says Litman.
In the Vesijärvi Lake, water fleas generally consumes a strong -selective vertebral plankton community, while a very selective click dryer in selecting algae groups.
“In my thesis, I found that the valemoids can significantly reduce the abundance of high -quality algae, creating a chance of low -quality algae, such as blue bacteria, to flourish,” explains Litman. “However, Calanoids also provides high -quality fish food, which reduces the broader effect of low -quality algae within the food network.”
The routine monitoring of vegetarian pattern societies provides only one aspect of the story. The other side is the plant plankton sponsored by animal plankton.
“In the future, greater attention should be paid to the entire food network instead of focusing on individual species when studying the effects of climate change, planning restoration measures, and monitoring their effects,” says Litmanen.
