Big soccer match: JSerra vs. Orange Lutheran

It’s the girls’ soccer game of the year, and the Southern Section Division I championship game will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange.

Jesera 27-0. Orange Lutheran, the defending Division I champion, is 24-2, with two losses to JSerra.

Can the Lions beat a great Orange Lutheran team three times in one season?

Quarterback Makenna Cook and her Lancer teammates have certainly learned lessons from the last two matchups. Cook had four passes intercepted in the 18-7 loss the first time the two teams met. It was better in the 21-20 loss. You will try to distribute the ball to more goals and avoid turnovers.

JSerra has a group of freshmen who have lived up to expectations as future stars. Tessa Russell had three interceptions in the semifinal win over Dos Pueblos. Freshman midfielder Kate Meyer and freshman midfielder Ava Van Heerde took turns leading the offense. Freshman receiver Ava Irwin was catching passes like her brother Trent, who plays for the New York Jets.

While JSerra’s 11-man soccer program is going through turmoil and searching for a new coach, the girls’ team is on the cusp of having a perfect season.

There are six championship games on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. as the Southern Section concludes its second season of holding girls flag soccer championship games.
