Violent text messages sent by Virginia Democratic candidate Jay Jones were at the forefront Thursday when he and Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares faced off in their only debate.
As my RedState colleague Sister Toldjah reported, Jones’ campaign was plagued after news broke about text messages he sent to his former Republican colleague in the Virginia House of Delegates, Carrie Coyner, in August 2022. The messages included his fantasies about killing another former GOP colleague, then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert, and Gilbert’s children dying in his wife’s arms Jennifer. Really sick stuff.

Jones eventually apologized but refused to withdraw from the race. During their debate at the University of Richmond, Jones brought up the text messages himself and apologized again.
“I’m ashamed, I’m embarrassed and I’m sorry.”

“I’m ashamed, I’m embarrassed, and I’m sorry,” Jones said. “I’m sorry for Speaker Gilbert. I’m sorry for his family. I’m sorry for my family. And I’m sorry for every single Virginian.”

Then it was his opponent’s turn, and to say that it was Miyares who brought the receipts against Jones would be an understatement.
“Now you can say you’re sorry, but look at what happened,” Miyares said. “You had three years to apologize, Jay, but you didn’t. Three years to admit what you did was terrible. You chose to stay silent.”
“Carrie Queener called you in after that,” he added, “and you doubled over.” “It was after I called you out for sending those text messages, that’s when you said you were advocating for violence against children. And when this became public, we now know that your first statement wasn’t saying ‘I’m sorry’. The word ‘I’m sorry’ wasn’t even in your statement. It meant we were all texting that we were sorry.”
“I attacked [President Donald Trump] “And she attacked me,” Miyares continued.

But he wasn’t finished yet, as he pointed to the fact that the job Jones was running for included protecting children, which he clearly wasn’t doing, as he called for the killing of Gilbert’s children.
“I find it a bit astonishing that you would say today that one of the pillars of your public safety platform is protecting children. Were you protecting Jennifer’s children when you said you wanted to see them die in their mothers’ arms?!” Miyares said.
“How could anyone who has ever worked on any of the crimes against children, in all areas of federal and state domestic law administration, how could they take you seriously, being the top prosecutor, knowing that you are of the opinion that children should die in order to advance a political agenda?” He added.
“It’s unconscionable, and if you were truly ‘sorry,’ you wouldn’t be running for this office — because you’ve disqualified yourself,” Miyares continued.
In another clip, the attorney general candidate said Jones failed to understand the consequences of his actions.
“He keeps saying he’s sorry. Jay, if you were really sorry, you wouldn’t be running.”

“He keeps saying he’s sorry. Jay, if you were really sorry, you wouldn’t be running. If you really understood the ramifications of what you said about an innocent mother and her children. You know, Todd Gilbert. I served with him. Jennifer is coming to the General Assembly. She’s bringing her kids. We’d see them running down the hallways. They were 2 and 5 at the time. This wasn’t hypothetical. This wasn’t A number you know from afar. away. You actually know Todd. This is flesh and blood, the real husband. Jennifer is a real mom. These are real children. How in the world can you show sympathy and sympathy to a grieving mother who has lost her child to violence, because there is no cry in Virginia, like the cry of a mother who has lost her child. The prosecutor knows this because they stood in that courtroom. “Jay Jones never understood this because he’s not a prosecutor, he’s a politician trying to save his career.”

Miyares also revealed Jones’ soft record on crime, saying his opponent is “a politician, criminal first, victim last. We know that from his voting record.”

Virginians certainly seem to have an easy choice here.
