san francisco — A senior member of the Oakland Community College athletics team was shot on campus Thursday, the second time in two days the city has seen a shooting at a local school.
The Oakland Police Department said it was investigating the shooting that occurred shortly before noon at Laney College, where officers arrived to find a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to the hospital and his condition is unknown.
A senior member of the Laney athletics team was shot on campus at his field house, Mark Johnson, spokesman for the Peralta Community College District, said in an email.
“The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are holding him — and his loved ones — in our hearts during this extremely difficult time,” Johnson said. “Out of respect for their privacy, we will not reveal their names at this moment.”
Authorities did not immediately provide further details about the shooting.
John Beam, the school’s athletics director and longtime football coach, and the Laney Eagles were featured in the 2020 season of the Netflix docuseries “Last Chance U.” The docuseries focused on junior college athletes looking to turn their lives around.
Thursday’s incident came a day after a student was shot at Skyline High School in Oakland. The student’s condition is stable. Police said they arrested two juveniles and confiscated two firearms.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said she was “deeply saddened” by “the second shooting incident on a college campus in Oakland in one week.”
