The attack from the United States spends a radical action by universities throughout the United States. Academic institutions respond to the cost management campaign for US President Donald Trump with freezing of employment, travel restrictions and salary positions. An American university raises at least one of the employees, and is considering on the other campus of demobilization and leave.
The number of well -known schools and programs continues to restrict admission to postgraduate studies. The administration threatens more comprehensive discounts, prompting some scientists to fear the future of the American academic system, which depends on federal financing to finance everything from the salaries of graduate students to build maintenance and facilities.
“The academic model on which universities relied on conducting their research, to finance their students, to finance graduate students – all this in the crisis, because many of them, in some way, were funded through federal scholarships,” says Ashm Brakash, a political scientist at Washington University in Seattle. “This is an enormous shock.”
The White House did not respond to a request to comment before the time of publication.
Sudden
The administration suffocated multiple revenue flows for universities. The National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies ended the scholarships of research and stopped reviewing new grants. Universities can also face highly declining discounts on federal income of indirect expenses – which are used to operate research facilities – and increase in endowment taxes.
Dozens of universities face more severe restrictions. The US Department of Education announced that 60 American higher education institutions are under investigation due to the anti -Semitic harassment and discrimination. The administration was martyred with demonstrations that began in many universities after Israel invaded Gaza in 2023 in response to Hamas attacks.
The protests protests the Israeli war – the Hamas universities of the United States on each other: What is the next?
The administration has already canceled $ 400 million of scholarships and federal contracts to the University of Colombia in New York City “due to the continued failure of the school to protect Jewish students from discrimination,” according to Official.
On Wednesday, the media reported that the administration had occupied $ 175 million of federal funding for the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, due to its support for transgender athletes. A university spokesman said that its policies on the participation of students in sports teams are compatible with the policies of national sports bodies.
“The speed and scope of the assault from the federal government is completely new,” says Daniel Green, the information scientist at Maryland University at College Park.
Summer labor market
In response to financing discounts and concerns about the future, all employees and faculty members have been announced in institutions such as Petsburg University in Pennsylvania. The multidisciplinary intelligence institute in Maryland was planning to employ 40 faculty members in areas including chips, neurological networks, political science, history and health. “This will now be carved to three faculty members,” Green says.
Other schools, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, and the University of Pennsylvania, may have frozen employment in the first place for jobs other than faculty members.
Settlement measures in universities include an increase in wages, job promotions, and directions to avoid unnecessary travel and training. Jeffin West, a account at the University of Washington, says that spending has been frozen on conferences, food and events – “The types of things that bring people together, which harm the morale more in many ways.” Universities stop spending on membership, dues and subscriptions, some of which review spending on new buildings and renovations.
The University of Washington restricts researchers from granting grant financing until the money is delivered. “This is a big problem,” says West. “Eliminate this really slows down the search.”
Pipeline
A large number of universities limits admission to graduate studies. Several departments at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have admitted fewer graduates this year. Cancellation of the West Virginia University Health Research Office and the teaching of postgraduate studies at Morgantown offers for students who have not yet returned admission letters. And dozens of applicants at the Mornings College at the Medical College at UMASS University in early March, they were informed in early March that their temporary offers for admission had been canceled.
