A man was hit by a train at a station in western Germany while he was looking at the phone

A 27-year-old man suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a train in western Germany as he stood on the platform looking at his phone, authorities said Friday.

The accident occurred at Lechlingen train station in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Thursday.

According to federal police, the man was distracted by his mobile phone and stood too close to the edge of the platform.

When the train arrived at the station, the driver sounded a warning and applied the emergency brake, but was unable to prevent the collision.

The 27-year-old was seriously injured and was taken to hospital in a helicopter ambulance.

The railway line between Leverkusen-Obladen and Leichlingen stations is temporarily closed.
