A grand jury indicts a Texas resident for allegedly threatening a Louisville coach

A grand jury has indicted Texas resident Brian S. Mandel on alleged threats made against Louisville football coach Jeff Brohm, his family, quarterback Miller Moss and others.

Louisville Courier JournalCiting court documents, it said Mandel was charged with multiple counts of second-degree terroristic threatening and a separate count of attempted extortion.

A Jefferson Circuit Court judge issued a warrant for Mandel’s arrest. As of Tuesday evening, he had not been detained. His bond was set at $100,000, court records show.

The alleged extortion charge stems from Mandel potentially trying to “obtain property valued at $10,000 or more” from Moss by “threatening bodily injury,” according to court filings.

Louisville offensive coordinator Brian Broome, Jeff’s relative, was among those allegedly targeted by Mandel. A copy of the indictment said the threats were made between November 8 and 9.

An unnamed university police officer was listed as the complaint’s witness. The motive behind the alleged crimes remains unclear. A detailed account was also not included in the indictment.

An athletics department spokesperson said the university will remain in contact with authorities throughout the investigation. “We commend law enforcement authorities for their swift and decisive action in addressing this matter,” a statement from the Media Relations Department said. He added: “Threats of violence have no place in our society or in sports, and we will continue to work closely with the authorities to ensure a safe environment for everyone.”

Pending arrest, Mandel is scheduled to be arraigned on November 17.
