topeka (KSNT) – With the cold weather coming, many people are choosing to stay indoors – but that’s not always an option. When temperatures drop, your car can face serious risks if it’s not properly prepared.
Cold conditions can affect several parts of your car, starting with the tires. Having the right amount of tire tread is essential to maintaining traction and preventing slippage on icy roads.
Freezing temperatures can also affect your car’s fluids and electrical systems. Coolant can freeze if it’s not at the right level or mixture, while electrical components such as starters, batteries and alternators are more likely to fail in extreme cold. These issues can quickly turn into costly repairs — or leave you stranded.

A quick inspection can make a big difference, says Mike Johnston, a technician at Pit Stop Automotive.
“A quick 15-minute diagnostic test doesn’t hurt when we have a cold front,” Johnston told 27News.
Taking preventive steps before temperatures drop can help reduce the chances of car problems — and keep drivers safe during winter weather.
