Gaten Matarazzo addressed a lingering point of confusion among Stranger Things fans.
In a new chat with GQ Magazinethe actor opened up about what happened to Susie, played by Gabriella Pezzullo, Dustin’s long-distance girlfriend, as the hit Netflix series wraps up with season five.
Explaining why Susie has largely faded into the background, Matarazzo said it eventually reached the scope of the final season.
“I think it was just a matter of having a lot of ground to cover in the season,” he began.
“And when we start at the beginning of Season 5, it’s already been a long time where Dustin hasn’t been in a very good place.”
The actor went on to suggest that Dustin’s emotional state likely affected his relationships, including his relationship with Susie.
“And if he wasn’t really interacting with his friends in town, I doubt he was focused too much on interacting with his long-distance girlfriend, which is bad of him.
“At the height of his grief, I imagine he might have been in a place where he might have called it off.”
