Oprah Winfrey is on tour to promote her new book, “Enough: Your Weight and What It Means to Be Free.” In 2023, she reportedly had one of her famous “aha” moments, as this time she realized that her path to personal freedom involved GLP-1 agonist drugs. I stopped seeing obesity as a personal failure and started looking at GLP-1s as a way to “quiet the noise” that comes with constant food cravings. In her novel, she is suddenly free.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Oprah’s “aha moments” are real, and I also see the great value of GLP-1 drugs, especially in a society where nearly 70% of the population is either… Overweight or obesity.

I also like the way these medications work, reducing hunger signals in the brain and delaying stomach emptying, which has added benefits that may include reducing cravings for alcohol, improving insulin efficiency and reducing inflammation in the body. They lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, and improve heart function, which is one of the reasons many cardiologists take them.

But they are also false gods. They’re powerful tools for doctors and their patients, but they don’t replace treating your body like a temple and honoring it by exercising more, sleeping better, and eating healthier foods. The place to start is not with GLP-1 drugs**; they are not medical miracles in and of themselves.

It’s also part of a larger problem where people rush to injections and pills looking for solutions without fully examining the underlying cause. Of course, as a practicing internist, it is important for me to help you lose weight by any safe means necessary, because of the strong association between obesity and the risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure. Several types of cancerincluding breast, colon, liver and pancreatic cancer.

GLP-1 drugs are not miracle drugs, they are simply effective tools in the arsenal of doctors trained to combat obesity.

Their worship can lead to a dependence that is difficult to break, and when they stop, patients (including Oprah) often find themselves regaining the weight.

Holding these medications as the only effective solution also opens the door for charlatans to use them to evangelize many to take the cheats and cheap alternatives sold through online pharmacies which may be medically dangerous.

A more fundamental approach is to look at the food we eat and embrace the MAHA movement — “Make America Healthy Again” — which focuses on whole foods, while declaring war on ultra-processed foods.

God did not put us on this planet to pollute our bodies with chemicals**, **dyes**,** or artificial flavors or sweeteners that lure us into a world of unhealthy addiction.

Replacing addiction to unhealthy foods with reliance on GLP-1 medications is not the only viable long-term solution.

Keep in mind that weight loss can also be linked to your faith, seeing your body as sacred, aligning spiritual discipline with healthy eating and exercise, and seeking comfort in God rather than food.

In fact, there are many prayers in the Bible that may help us treat obesity. here One of my favorites:

“Your Word says that my body is your temple, and I am responsible for stewarding this gift. Today I choose to make the right choices regarding the foods I eat. I will not eat more than my body needs, nor will I fill my mouth with unhealthy foods, such as excess sugar and carbohydrates. I refuse to live a life of gluttony and clothe myself with self-control and healthy living so that I can serve you well.”
