A surefire way to save on headphones this holiday season is to check out deals on older models.
As of December 22, there’s something worth checking out: a $152 sale on the Sony WH-1000XM5, bringing it down to just $248 at Amazon and Best Buy. Considering that most new flagship models are priced at $450 and up at full price, this is an especially worthwhile deal.
I had the opportunity to test the Sony XM5 headphones directly against the XM6, and while I appreciated the return of foldable earcups to the Noise-canceling capability isn’t much different, and although sound quality was better on the newer model, it was only a noticeable jump when I tested the headphones on the same songs back-to-back.

Mashable editor Timothy Beckwirth also noted in his review of the XM6 that the changes between the XM5 and XM6 headphones were “more iterative than innovative.” The inputs, 30-hour battery life, and call support remain the same between generations.

Although the XM6 headphones are also on sale as of December 22, they’re still $150 more than the XM5 headphones, making the latter a better buy from a pure value perspective (and a better option for anyone who doesn’t need Sony’s latest and greatest tech). The XM5s still hold their own, and with this deal, you can also choose from the four available colors.
