Alex Warren talks about how my father died in front of him

Alex Warren remembers losing his father to cancer as a child

Alex Warren is very grateful for his current “normal” life after going through so much.

During an appearance on the Jay Shetty Podcast, Warren spoke about losing his father to cancer when he was just nine years old. The singer’s problems continued as he grew up with an alcoholic mother and experienced homelessness. He almost died when a friend’s father accidentally shot him while he was living out of a car.

“He had cancer four times, I mean the entire time I was born, but he beat it three times, and the fourth time he got it and died when I was 9. So I probably remember him from 5 to 9,” the Before She Left Me hitmaker said.

The singer then shared the last conversation he had with his sick father, mentioning that they were joking.

“I remember the night before the last conversation I ever had with him, he was high on drugs, and I was messing with him. I was like, ‘Dad, will you buy me a Ferrari?’ And he was saying yes to everything,” Warren shared.

“It’s weird to think about it at the time, like this was my farewell. I was kind of with him. All I know is that he died kidding us,” he noted.

Warren remembers trying to wake his father when he died, because he was unable to understand death at the age of nine.

“I remember when he died I would wake up like he was dead in front of me. And I think it was just a whole moment trying to be like, ‘Stop kidding around.’ I was 9 years old, but I understood that he was dead, but I didn’t understand what that meant of course. And so, for 20 minutes… I was slapping him. I was shaking him and begging him to wake up.”

Alex Warren has been making solo music since 2021. His song of 2025 normal It was a massive hit and peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks in multiple countries.
