What information was stolen?

This number includes students, employees, applicants, and in some cases family members. The media also reported that the threat representative claimed that he stole nearly 460 GB of data from Colombia.

Colombia has confirmed that the stolen information relates to acceptance, registration and financial aid records, as well as the specific employee data. Includes open information categories:

  • Names and dates of birth and social security numbers
  • Contact details and demographic information
  • Academic history and financial aid records
  • Insurance details and some health information

Colombia confirmed that patients’ records from the Irfing Medical Center at the University of Colombia were not affected. However, the expansion of stolen data poses serious risk of stealing identity and fraud.

Columbia University response

Colombia has reported the law enforcement and works with cybersecurity experts. The university said it has strengthened its systems through new guarantees and improved protocols to prevent future accidents.

Starting August 7, Colombia began sending messages to the affected people, as it provided two years of free credit monitoring, fraud consultation and identity theft restoration services.

Upon calling, Colombia referred Cyberguy to the official society updates, which were published on June 24 and August 5.

While the university says there is no evidence that the stolen data has been misused yet, the risk is still high. Criminal criminals often wait for the most famous before exploiting the stolen data.

Steps to protect yourself after the violation of Columbia University

If you are among the affected or simply want to protect your data, take these steps today:

1) Monitor your credit reports

Check your credit reports regularly through envalcreditreport.com. Find the accounts that you did not open or the changes you did not impose.

2) Using a personal data removal service

Since Colombia has confirmed that stolen files may include the names, addresses and demographic details, consider using the personal data removal service. These services help clean your information from data brokers and people’s search sites, which makes it difficult for criminals to take advantage of exposed details. This step reduces the chance to link Colombia’s stolen records with your broader Internet identity.

Although there is no service that ensures the complete removal of your data from the Internet, the data removal service is really a smart choice. It is not cheap, nor is it your privacy. These services do all work for you through effective monitoring and systematically erasing your personal information from hundreds of websites. This gives me peace of mind and has proven to be the most effective way to erase your personal data from the Internet. By reducing the available information, you reduce the risk of referring to the cross -cut data from the violations of information that they may find on the dark web, making it difficult for them to target you.

Create long and complex passwords for each account. The password manager can help and store it safely.

Next, know whether your email has been shown in previous violations. Password Director 1 (see Cyberguy.com/passwords) Pick includes a built -in scanner that learns whether your email address or passwords have appeared in a known leak. If you discover a match, change any passwords immediately and secure these accounts with new and unique credentials.

6) Watch attempts to hunt and use a strong antivirus program

Budgets may try to use fear about penetration using counterfeit emails or texts. Check any message before clicking on the links or sharing personal information.
